Hi Laura: Without going through the calculations to see if you reach your goals for numbers of players (please refer to numerous prior posts on how to calculate blinds to reach a target number of players)....  I would make the following suggestions:

A) a 5-day tournament is quite prestigious and will be an arduous challenge for your players. Given that, I would highly recommend against "dramatic" blind increases such as you have in levels: 5, 7, 16, 22 and 24.  Your scheduled increases on those levels are at least 50%. That's too steep for a blind increase at a prestigious tournament, IMO.

B) Your starting stack of 35,000 tourney chips is 700 times the first BB of 50.  It's not necessary to start out with such a disparity. You could easily start out with your 50-100 level (which is 1 / 350th of your starting stack).

By making the adjustments in your blind increases, you can smooth out the increases so that they are never more than 20-25% per level. Even 25% is steep for a 5-day event. Your players will appreciate the slower increases as this permits them to play their best poker.... and perhaps most important, greatly increases the likelihood they will return for your next event!  Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

the calculations of how to reach 30% of the field for each day 1 is my main problem!don't seem to know how to use the formula of 5% on multipule days(nb of players x starting stack x 5%=bb of the last level)please more help will be greatly appreciad

Laura please advise as to whether you have a time limit for each day. For example, do you have to be out of the building by midnight each day, or can you play until you reach your approximate target number of players each night?

Thanks!

casacubana

hi mike,
no i don't have to be out of the building!i can play untill the target number is reached!

Laura it's slightly confusing, you say 5 days total but then you list 1a, 1b, 1c, day 2, day 3, final table. So is that 6 days total or is the final table on day 3?

Regardless, let's assume the final table is on day 3. And assume you want a 10-handed final table.

SO, you have: 450 players X ($30,000 + $5,000) buy in for total chips in play of 15,750,000.

Your final table will usually form somewhere around an average chipstack of plus or minus 20 to 25 BB's.   So if we run that out for 15,750,00 divided by 10 players equals average stack of 1,575,000.  20 BB's would put the blinds at 39-78k, 25 BB's would put blinds at 31-62k and so forth.

SO, that means that towards the end of your day 2, your blind levels should be, for example:

25,000 - 50,000
30,000 - 60,000
35,000 - 70,000
40,000 - 80,000
50,000 - 100,000

The final table could form at any of these levels, depending on the action, most likely at the 35-70K level, but you have to budget time to go beyond as short stacks will hang on tenaciously towards the end. Each blind level should have a strong ante associated to encourage active play.  The bottom line is that since you don't have a time limit to exit the building you can play until the final table is reached on the evening of Day 2.

thank you mike for your help!can you tell me what you think about this  new structure?also what level you think days 1 will finish based on 150 players per day and will play to 30% of the field( i am realy having hard time with the 5% formula to calculate multi day event)?thank you again for your help!

Hi Casa: I think your structure is dramatically improved but needs a few more tweaks. Here are some suggestions:

1) Make Level 5 125/250 instead of 100/200 because the jump from Level 5 to 6 as you currently have it (100/200 jumping to 150/300) is too steep (50% jump, plus a doubling of the ante) for a 5th interval increase IMO.

2) Also, the jump from level 29 to 30 is very sharp (33%) that deep in the tournament. Instead I would make level 30 35k/70k then the next level 40k/80k and so on as you have it.

3) As I mentioned in prior thread, you will likely form your final table around blinds 35k/70 to 40k/80.You will still need further blind increases to take you down to the final 3 players, heads-up, and winner.  Again based on a total 15,750,000 chips in play, if we divide that by your final 3 players that's an average stack of 20 BB's at 125k/250k, 15 BB's at 175k/350k, and 10BB's each at 250k/500k.  The end is likely to come somewhere around 200k/400k as the final 2 or 3 players get short-stacked and have to go all-in.

Based on this, I would add levels: 125k/250k, 150k/300k, 175k/350k, 200k/400k, 250k/500k and 300k/600k with appropriate antes. It's unlikely that you'll reach 300k/600k but you could very well reach 200k/400k or even 250k/500k.

4) Item 3 gives us 6 additional levels, for a total of 40 levels. Divide by 3 days and that's 13 levels per day. Decide how long you want each level to run... 50 minutes each would give you a bit over 10 hours of play per day plus add to that break time. How many hours do you want this tourney to run each day? From there you can work back to the duration of each interval.

5) Don't be too concerned if you hit your "30% of the field" target at the end of Day 1 or not. Those are estimated targets. The key is that you WILL finish your event on Day 3, most likely in the 200k/400k level. If you start Day 3 with 2 or even 3 tables, that shouldn't be a problem, you'll still finish on time and that's the key.

6) Have a great payout structure. Personally I like to distribute the payout to at least the top 10% of finishers. You don't have to pay 1st place so heavy, structure nice payouts for players all along the payout and they will appreciate it. In your case with a handle of $1.35 million I assume there's an award pool over $1.2 million so if first place gets $300,000 and nice bling (see #7) that's a great round number to advertise.

7) Add some nice trophies, and an engraved bracelet to the winner, and give your tournament a great title, your players will definitely enjoy it and be back!

Hope this helps!
